[ARCHIVED] Oversized Vehicle Restrictions Taking Effect

Beginning February 27, 2023, at 12:01 A.M. the City of DeKalb will prohibit oversized vehicles from traveling on specific roads. The restriction shall remain in effect until further notice.

Current weather conditions contribute to a phenomenon known as the “spring freeze/thaw cycle.”  Warm temperatures thaw frozen water settled in the soil beneath roads. The unsettling creates a weakened subsurface easily susceptible to damage from oversized vehicles traveling over the road pavement.  

Vehicles prohibited from traveling on posted roads include:

  • Single axle vehicles exceeding 8,000 lbs. per axle
  • Tandem axle vehicles exceeding 11,000 lbs. per axle with a gross weight of 33,000 lbs. or more

Seasonal weight limits will be in effect for the following roadways:

The oversized vehicle restrictions are seasonal, and the standard restrictions will resume once the “spring freeze/thaw cycle” completes.   

Conditions may permit travel depending on the load size.  Contact Andy Raih at the Public Works Department at (815) 748-2040 to request permission.
