[ARCHIVED] Restrictions Placed on Oversize Vehicles

A sign reads "City of DeKalb, Department of Public Works"

Beginning March 3, 2022, at 12:01 A.M. the City of DeKalb will prohibit over-sized vehicles from traveling on specific roads. The restriction shall remain in effect until further notice. Current weather conditions contribute to a phenomenon known as the “spring freeze/thaw cycle”. Warm temperatures thaw frozen water settled in the soil beneath roads. The unsettling creates a weakened subsurface easily susceptible to damage from oversized vehicles traveling over the road pavement.

Vehicles prohibited from traveling on posted roads include:

  • Single axle vehicles exceeding 8,000 lbs. per axle
  • Tandem axle vehicles exceeding 11,000 lbs. per axle with a gross weight of 33,000 lbs. or more

The oversized vehicle restrictions are seasonal, and the standard restrictions will resume once the “spring freeze/thaw cycle” completes.

Conditions may permit travel depending on the load size.  Contact Andy Raih at the Public Works Department at (815) 748-2040 to request permission.
