Effective at 10:00p on Monday, November 2nd, 2020, the City of DeKalb Public Transit System will begin offering late night public transportation services via the Huskie Line Route 11 to accommodate the travel needs of students and residents located within the Northern Illinois University campus area.
The overnight service will replace Northern Illinois University’s existing Safe Line Service and will be open and available to the public. The Huskie Line fixed route system currently provides public
transit service from 4:00am – 12:00am, Monday – Friday, and 7:00a – 12:00a on Saturday’s and Sunday’s. The transition to 24-hour continuous service aligns with the City of DeKalb and Northern Illinois University’s consolidation of transit services originally implemented on January 1, 2019.
The Huskie Line Route 11 will provide service from 10:00pm – 7:00am, 362 days a year except for New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Passengers will be able to access
downtown DeKalb, Taylor St., Schnucks, West Lincoln Highway, NIU Residence Halls, Eco Park, Twombly Rd., Ridge Dr., and the DuSable Turnaround. The Route 11 will operate on a 60-minute
frequency, departing from the bus turnaround on the west side of the Holmes Student Center at the top of each hour with the last lap beginning at 6:00am. In addition, departures, arrivals, and location information for the Route 11 will be available in real time through the ETA Spot mobile application. To accommodate the elderly or disabled passengers, as well as the general public who may have
difficulty getting to a bus stop, the Route 11 will deviate up to a quarter mile from the designated route to drop-off or pick-up passengers at a safe location between the hours of 12:00am and 7:00am.
