[ARCHIVED] A Message from Mayor Jerry Smith

Mayor in a Mask

As we near summer’s end, a vicious virus continues to put a stranglehold on our nation.  As I travel around our City, I applaud those of us who have protected ourselves…and those around us…with the wearing of masks.

Most recently, our Governor has mandated that we reinforce this safety measure in bars and restaurants.  It is now a requirement that when communicating with establishment employees, waiters and bartenders, that masks be worn.

Granted, this can be an inconvenience, especially when we’re in the middle of a meal or enjoying a beer in a pub.

But, now that NIU is back in session…and we see the possibility of a spike in positivity in our region…adhering to these mask measures certainly makes sense.  As Mayor of the City of DeKalb, I strongly encourage all of our citizens to follow these guidelines, especially in locales where social distancing is difficult to manage.  \

I realize there are some who tout individual liberty as the basis of their decision not to join most of their fellow citizens in wearing appropriate face covering or masks during this pandemic.  But, I strongly encourage restaurant and bar patrons to “mask up,” and ask our bar and restaurant owners to insist that their customers do so.

It’s simply the right thing to do.
