Spring appears to have finally descended upon the northern Illinois region, and with the season’s arrival, the City of DeKalb is refreshing its Paint-A-Plug fire hydrant art program.
The Paint-A-Plug program was initiated by the city’s Citizens’ Community Enhancement Commission (CCEC) in 2018 as way for community members to transform fire hydrants throughout DeKalb into works of art. Individuals, groups or organizations have an opportunity to “adopt” a fire-hydrant in their neighborhood, downtown or other area within the city. Participants are encouraged to integrate elements of the community or their neighborhood into their fire-hydrant art.
Participants can adopt a hydrant free of charge, but artists are responsible for providing their own paint and materials. Additional information and the Paint-A-Plug application form is available via the City of DeKalb’s website at www.cityofdekalb.com/paintaplug.
Paint-A-Plug is open to both residents and non-residents of the City of DeKalb. Current participants include the DeKalb Public Library, Egyptian Theatre, Northern Illinois University and several local citizens. Local businesses, organizations, students and faculty from District 428 and NIU students, faculty and alumni are encouraged to participate in this fun and engaging public art project.
The CCEC will review applications and design proposals monthly. Upon approval of a design, artists are permitted to paint hydrants through November 1. Artists are encouraged to snap a photo or two of their completed fire hydrant art project and share the images on social media using #ProudlyDeKalb.
