The DeKalb Police Department Reminds Motorists To ‘Click It or Ticket’
The DeKalb Police Department Reminds Motorists To ‘Click It or Ticket’
The DeKalb Police Department today announced it is stepping up enforcement for the Memorial Day “Click It or Ticket” campaign May 13 – 31 and reminds motorists to buckle up. “Click It or Ticket” focuses on safety education and law enforcement support to save lives.
“Seat belts have proven to be one of the best ways to save your life in a crash,” said Commander Chad McNett, “Unfortunately, many still don’t buckle up. Worse yet, not wearing a seat belt is a habit that can be passed on to younger generations who follow the example set by their elders.”
Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, a popular time for traveling to visit family and friends. Whether you are traveling down the block or across the country, make sure you buckle up every time. Wearing a seat belt can reduce the risk of fatal injury by 45%. Seat belts save lives every day, but they’re only effective if they’re used.
While Illinois currently has a 93.5% seat belt use compliance rate, unbelted occupants still account for more than half of those killed in motor vehicle crashes. The simple click of a seat belt could save thousands of lives each year.
The “Click It or Ticket” campaign is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation with federal highway safety funds.
In a recent April Distracted Driving campaign, DeKalb Police issued a total of 57 tickets for speeding, cell phone violations, seatbelts, and other traffic violations.

Officer Involved Shooting 10/25/2021
DeKalb Police Department Officer Involved Shooting
On October 25, 2021, at approximately 2:45 a.m., DeKalb Police Officers responded to a Domestic Disturbance call involving Kristopher Kramer, in the 100 Block of Tilton Park Drive DeKalb, Illinois. Upon arrival, officers located a frantic female subject in the backyard at the aforementioned residence. The female subject who had contacted the DeKalb Police Department initially to report the domestic disturbance advised officers that the male subject (Kramer) in the residence had been drinking an alcoholic beverage, was armed with a “Samurai Sword”, and threatened to kill the female subject and attack officers. The female subject advised officers that he was a danger to himself and had self-inflicted wounds to his wrist. The female subject was escorted to a safe location away from the residence as officers attempted to make contact with Kristopher Kramer.
Officers attempted to make contact with Kristopher Kramer by speaking through the front door of the residence. After numerous attempts to make contact, officers finally were able to start a dialogue through the door of the residence. Officers talked to Kramer for an extended amount of time, attempting to de-escalate the situation. Officers were able to convince Kramer to open the door of the residence and speak to them, however, at that time Kramer grabbed a large edged-weapon consistent with the description of a “Samurai Sword”, and advanced towards the officer with the weapon over his head and pointed at officers.
Officers ordered Kramer to drop the weapon and stop several times. Kramer refused to comply with multiple orders by officers which led to the deployment of less than lethal measures (Taser and Bean Bag Projectile), and one officer fired one round from a departmental firearm striking Kramer in the chest area (upper torso). Officers and DeKalb Fire Department immediately rendered aid to Kramer.
Kramer was transported to Kishwaukee Hospital by DeKalb Fire Department. Once at Kishwaukee Hospital, life-saving measures were attempted. Sadly, Kristopher Kramer succumbed to his injuries.
On February 10, 2022, DeKalb County State’s Attorney Rick Amato received an investigative file from the Illinois State Police, who was requested to investigate the City of DeKalb Officer Involved Shooting that occurred on October 25, 2021. The DeKalb Police Department Recognizes Distracted Driving Awareness Month
April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month across the nation, and the DeKalb Police Department is urging drivers to drop their phones and focus on the road with a not-so-subtle reminder: “Phone in One Hand? Ticket in the Other.”
“It is still all too common to see people driving down the road while looking at their phones,” said Commander Chad McNett. “People know texting and driving is both dangerous and illegal, but they do it anyway, putting themselves and others at risk. During April, you will see increased law enforcement efforts as officers stop and ticket anyone who violates distracted driving and other Illinois motor vehicle laws.”
In support of this effort, the DeKalb Police Department is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies around Illinois for the entire month of April.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a total of 26,004 people died in U.S. crashes involving a distracted driver between 2012 and 2019.
The distracted driving campaign is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation with federal traffic safety funds.
