About the Department
The mission of the Community Development Department is to provide quality services, information, and support to DeKalb residents, elected officials, property owners, and visitors. We are charged with the enforcement of locally adopted building codes, providing and maintaining the City's Comprehensive Plan and zoning regulations, facilitating an efficient development process, and influencing investment in the community. These efforts help protect and enhance the overall quality of life in DeKalb.
Duties & Responsibilities
Building and Code Compliance
Reviewing and approving building permits; registering contractors annually; enforcing property maintenance regulations; ensuring individuals performing building work adhere to local, state, and national codes.
Community Development Programs
Administering the federally funded Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, City of DeKalb Human Services Funding grants, and Housing Rehabilitation Assistance Program; and coordinating Neighborhood Support Programs to improve the quality of life for all residents.
Economic Development
Building relationships between the City and businesses and industries; encouraging retention and expansion of existing businesses and industries that benefit the community; and promoting DeKalb as a great place in which to live, grow a family, or locate business.
Planning and Zoning
Planning for a vibrant, diverse, and distinct community; achieving balanced, sustained, and quality growth; and preparing analysis and recommendations on the impact of specific development projects.
