Notice of Email Security Incident
The City of DeKalb is committed to protecting the security and confidentiality of personal information. Regrettably, this notice concerns an incident that may have involved some of that information.
On January 18, 2019, we discovered an incident involving some of our employees’ email accounts. We conducted an investigation, secured the email accounts, and retained a leading computer forensic firm to assist us. Our investigation revealed that an unauthorized individual had gained access to certain City of DeKalb employees’ email accounts and may have accessed or downloaded the contents of the email accounts. After conducting a thorough review of the emails and attachments potentially accessed by the unauthorized individual, we determined on April 2, 2019 that the affected emails may have contained personal information including names, driver’s license numbers, Social Security numbers, and in some cases financial account numbers, payment card numbers, or medical information. The City of DeKalb’s internal network and file systems, which are distinct from our email systems, were not accessed.
We are in the process of providing notice to individuals regarding the incident by first class mail. Additionally, although we have no indication that the information in the emails has been misused in any way, we are offering one year of complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection services to individuals whose Social Security numbers or driver’s license numbers may have been accessed. We have also established a dedicated call center to answer any questions that affected clients may have. If you have any questions, please call the call center at 855-424-2584, Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time. We encourage potentially affected individuals to remain vigilant by reviewing their account statements for any unauthorized activity.
We sincerely regret that this incident occurred and apologize for any inconvenience or concern this may cause. To further protect personal information, the City of DeKalb has implemented additional safeguards and technical security measures.
