January 28th, 2001-TRIPLE SHOOTING
On January 28, 2001 a birthday party was being held at 885 Regent Drive, #104.  A large number of people were present at the party.

At about 0137hrs an argument erupted when some cake frosting got on the clothing of one of the guests.  This argument led to the ejection of the guest and his friends.  Immediately after the ejection, a tenant entered the hallway and was shot.  Another tenant then entered the hallway and was also shot. The shooters fired numerous rounds.  A round that penetrated the apartment wall from the hallway also struck a guest.

Most of the guests tried to leave the area prior to the arrival of police.  Those that were contacted claimed to have no knowledge of the shooters.  The only cooperative witnesses have been the victims, their families, some of the victim’s friends, and third parties.

Prior to the shooting, there were two large black-oriented events held in DeKalb.  The first event was a rap and talent show held at the Egyptian Theatre on the evening of January 27.  The offenders may have attended this event.

A large dance, at which some of the rappers appeared, was then held at the NIU Recreation Center.

After the Egyptian Theatre show, some of the birthday guests stopped at Harold’s Chicken while enroute to the party.  While there; it is believed that one of the partygoers instructed the shooters to follow the vehicle she was in so that they could attend the party.  She reportedly asked the tenants if her “friends” could attend the party.  No one admits to knowing the names or addresses of these “friends.

Two vehicles occupied by the shooters are believed to have driven to the party.  Once there, the shooters are described as having kept to themselves near the hallway door. Some cake frosting got onto Suspect #2, causing an argument and the subsequent ejection.  It is possible that one of the shooters displayed a gun (or another partygoer spotted it) just prior to the ejection.  One of the shooters referred to himself and friends as “Mafia.”  Immediately after, or just prior to, the ejection a tenant proceeded to the hallway.  He was shot as soon as he stepped out.  Another tenant followed and encountered the same fate.

The suspects are believed to have fled the scene in two vehicles.  The Navigator vehicle may have sustained damage to the left front and right rear through striking parked cars during the escape.

It is possible that one subject with the group of shooter’s was left behind and eventually transported back to Chicago.

Suspects observed with the group of shooters (about eight subjects total):

Suspect #1:     Male/Black, tall, thin build, wearing a two-tone leather jacket predominantly green with some black, which was worn off the shoulders.  This suspect was also wearing a multi-colored (predominantly cream and burnt orange) Coogi brand sweater with a matching knit cap.

Suspect #2:     Male/Black, tall, thin build, wearing a powder blue outfit and a matching blue baseball hat with a snakeskin brim (a “150” hat).  This suspect may have two empty teardrop tattoos under his right eye (this tattoo description was provided by only one witness).

Suspect #3:     Male/Black, tall, heavy set, wearing a powder blue “puffy” coat with a matching color baseball cap.  He was also wearing a long white gold chain around his neck.  This subject is believed to have been the main offender.  This subject was also described as wearing a black puffy coat and a black and white knit cap.

The suspects were believed to have left the scene in two separate vehicles - an olive green Navigator SUV and a dark-colored SUV or van, make unknown.
