The Neighborhood
Watch program works by showing residents they are not powerless
against crime. It does this through crime prevention training,
victim assistance, citizen patrols, phone trees and improving
the overall condition of their neighborhood.
One of the main purposes of the neighborhood watch group is to
get to know your neighbors. Neighborhood Watch groups do this by
holding meetings, block parties, cookouts, etc. Officers often
come to these meetings to speak about preventative measures
residents can take to remain safe.
Residents observe their neighborhood for suspicious activity and
report it to the police department. After reporting the activity
to the police department, residents are encouraged to utilize
the phone tree they set up to spread the information to other
members of their group.
