Lou Larson
Building Supervisor

The City of DeKalb operates in compliance with locally adopted codes that are designed to maintain a healthy, safe and clean environment and to preserve the quality of life that residents and businesses enjoy in our community.

The Building Division is now a part of  the Public Works Department and is comprised of Building & Code and Property Maintenance.  The purpose of the Building Division is to maintain a safe and desirable community for the citizens of DeKalb.   There is a duty to protect the public from disaster due to fire, structural collapse and general deterioration, which underscores the need for modern codes and their administration.  Safety is achieved through proper design and construction practices, issuance of permits and inspections that verify compliance with building codes.

The primary responsibility of the Building Division is to review building permit applications, issue building permits, inspect construction work and provide technical assistance to residents and contractors.  The Building Division also strives to maintain a desirable community by enforcing local Property Maintenance codes as well as responding to citizen concerns.
