Community Services & Programs

  1. Adopt A School

    Officers are assigned to patrol the schools before, during and after school to give a police presence and to create a relationship with the students, teachers and parents.

  2. ALERT DeKalb

    ALERT DeKalb keeps residents and travelers informed on potentially hazardous situations involving weather, traffic and other emergencies.

  3. Bicycle Registration

    Citizens of DeKalb are encouraged to register their bicycles to assist the police in returning the bike should it be recovered.

  4. Camp Power

    This program teaches youth and families multiple ways to utilize a vast array of recreational resources and assist them in other life choices.

  5. Chaplain

    The DeKalb Police Chaplain program was developed to provide better service to the citizens of DeKalb as well as department personnel in times of personal crisis.

  6. Child Passenger Safety Seat

    The DeKalb Police Department started the Child Passenger Safety Seat program in the summer of 2001.

  7. Crime Prevention

    The DeKalb Police Department provides various crime prevention programs for the citizens and businesses of DeKalb.

  8. DUI DAY

    A mock DUI accident is held at the DeKalb High School just prior to prom. The scenario demonstrates first responders attending to a alcohol-related accident that involves serious injury and death.

  9. Firearm Take Back

    The Firearms Take Back program was created to reduce the number of unwanted firearms in our homes in order to reduce the availability for unlawful purposes on the street.

  10. Hunter Safety Course

    The DeKalb Police Department began sponsoring the Hunter Safety class in 1978 and since its inception over 600 people have taken the course.

  11. Internship Program

    The Internship Program is designed to give college students studying the field of law enforcement or criminal justice the opportunity to gain real world, job related work experience.

  12. National Night Out

    The National Night Out is a community education event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch.

  13. National Prescription Drug Take Back

    This program is for those who wish to drop off expired, unused or unwanted prescription or even over-the-counter medicines.

  14. Neighborhood Watch

    The Neighborhood Watch program works by showing residents they are not powerless against crime.

  15. Not On My Campus

    NIU and Kishwaukee College Student Associations along with the Police Department are working to together to help make campus and community a safer place.

  16. Rape Aggression Defense Training (RAD)

    RAD are self defense classes for women to enhance the option of self defense.

  18. T.I.P.S.

    In November 2003, the Police Department was approached by the Ben Gordon Mental Health Center regarding a grant they received from the Department of Juvenile Justice: the grant was to be used in an effort to curb alcohol related incidents involving underage violators.

  19. Tobacco Compliance Checks

    Being concerned with the instances of underage smoking, the DeKalb Police Department performs tobacco compliance checks when possible.

  20. TRIAD

    The DeKalb Police Department is a proud member of the DeKalb County Triad. Our Triad consists of Law Enforcement, Community Organizations, and individuals working together to improve the quality of life for older adults in DeKalb County.
